An antique section of the original 45 pound narrow gauge steel train track in Alaska USA that was used by White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad Rail in 1898. These were the first rails for the Lake Bennett to Whitehorse route and were built from 45 lb. track from England. The WP&YR was built during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800's. The railroad extends 110 miles from Skagway, Alaska, to the rich gold fields of the Klondike. This piece of rail was preserved by J.D. True, who was an engineer that spent nearly 40 years working for the railroad in Alaska. J.D. True made these bookends and sold them as Souvenirs from the rails. marked as follows: Stamped: W.P. & Y.R.R.R. 1898 LAKE BENNETT TO WHITEHORSE FIRST RAIL FROM ENGLAND 45 LB. [this pound weight is the original weight per yard for the track] Inscribed/Engraved: Made in Skagway Alaska by J.D. True Still has its original paper label on the base. Measures approximately 10cm x 5cm x 10cm Weight 1.1 kg Condition: vintage, used, old; surface patina; as these bookends were made from a section of USED, original railroad track, the metal is pitted and shows signs of wear, including nicks, scratches, etc. Please study all of the photos carefully for condition & measurements.
