US Naval Support Activity (NSA) Da Nang, Vietnam. Established in 1965, NSA Da Nang was the logistical backbone of the I Corps Tactical Zone. This inaugural yearbook captures the very beginning of what became the Navy’s largest overseas shore operation.
The "Live Mortar" Miracle
This specific volume documents one of the most incredible medical feats of the Vietnam War: The live 60mm mortar extraction.
• The Event: Oct 1, 1966—PFC Nguyen Luong arrived with an unexploded mortar round lodged in his chest/shoulder.
• The Heroes: Captain Harry "Hal" Dinsmore (Surgeon) and EN2 John Lyons (EOD) performed a "suicide mission" surgery to remove the shell.
• The Documentation: Includes rare, chilling B&W photos of the surgery, the EOD team, and the post-op recovery. Capt. Dinsmore was awarded the Navy Cross for this act of valor.
