Featured in Rare Groove A to Z!
Featuring Roy Ayers!
This is the album "Muscle Shoals Nitty Gritty" by jazz flutist Herbie Mann!
(Released in 1970 on Atlantic's Embryo label, US original pressing, recorded at Muscle Shoals Studio)
Herbie Mann has released a vast amount of music, with many raregroove-esque works. This album, however, features the backing of musicians from Muscle Shoals, the mecca of Southern soul, resulting in a sound that is blacker, thicker, and with drums that are noticeably louder than usual.
The cover of Edwin Birdsong's "Can You Dig It" (side 1-3), originally on Roy Ayers' album "Ubiquity" (1970), is a standout track. The interplay between Herbie Mann's flute and Roy Ayers' vibraphone is exceptional, and it was praised in the AtoZ magazine as "a jazz funk so cool it gives you goosebumps!"
The title track (side 1-1), which starts with the call "1, 2, 3!" and is driven by tight, Bernard Purdie-esque drums, is also top-notch JAZZFUNK!
Side 2-1, with its interesting Jew's harp sound, is a funky track with a strong Southern flavor!
The cover of The Beatles' "Come Together" (side 2-2) is a low-funk masterpiece with a subtle, bluesy vibe!
