This is a vintage Belgium coat of arms plate made of pewter. Borgerhout is a district of the city of Antwerp, Belgium. The plate shown in the image features the coat of arms of the former municipality of Borgerhout, along with the Dutch words "Gemeente Borgerhout," which translates to "Municipality of Borgerhout". The municipality of Borgerhout was merged into the greater municipality of Antwerp in 1983, at which point it became one of the city's nine districts. The name "Borgerhout" comes from the words "borger" (citizen or fortified building) and "hout" (wood), and the tree on the coat of arms likely reflects the area's historical past as a forested region. The plate features the coat of arms for the former municipality of Borgerhout, which includes a crowned shield with a smaller shield inside, flanked by laurel or palm branches. It is from our collection of pewter German plates that I’m downsizing.
